Plot: A high school teacher's personal life becomes complicated as he works with students during the school elections, particularly with an obsessive overachiever determined to become student body president. |
One never needs a specific reason to watch Alexander Payne‘s spot-on send up of the American political and educational system—because it’s so damn good—but seeing that 2016 is an election year, and, more likely than not, you’re fed up with the apples and oranges of government, now’s the perfect time to watch Election. Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon) is the high school over-achiever that pushes history teacher, Mr. McAllister (Matthew Broderick) over the edge with her transparent desire for upward mobility. They both cross ethical and moral boundaries during a high school election that McAllister hopes she’ll lose, but what’s the difference between morals and ethics, anyway? Election is naughty, wickedly intelligent, and hilarious. Broderick and Witherspoon are perfectly harmonious and Chris Klein was a great Omaha find (for this film) as a doofus jock who Mr. McAllister attaches his high school reputation to. – Brian Formo
