Plot: An adaptation of the cult memoir of game show impresario Chuck Barris, in which he purports to have been a CIA hitman.

It’s not fair that George Clooney should be handsome, an amazing actor, and an incredible director, but here we are. His directorial debut remains his best and most audacious by following the odd tale of Chuck Barris (played in a career best performance by the incomparable Sam Rockwell), the host of The Gong Show who claimed that he was a spy working for the CIA. Clooney manages to carefully walk the line of Barris’ bizarre tale to mine both comedy and tragedy from someone who clearly lost touch with reality, and yet the movie rarely ventures into the surreal. We’re caught in Barris’ odd autobiography, forced to take him at face value, and see the darkness behind that glittering, glossy smile. – Matt Goldberg
